POP Forums was created out of necessity. In the summer of 1999, Guide to The Point,
a site that serves as an unofficial guide to an amusement park, was growing by leaps
and bounds. At the time it was using a Perl-based message board that seemed to get
slower and slower as traffic increased. The site was also playing host-tag at the
time, as the over-saturated Web hosting market was starting to shake out the winners
from the losers. As a result, the site changed hosts four times in a month. The
file-based message board was growing to thousands of files and was not easy to move.
The site eventually landed on a Windows NT host. That was the perfect opportunity
to build a database-backed solution that could easily use a SQL or Access database.
POP Forums Version 1.0 was born.
The second version evolved when CoasterBuzz, a roller coaster portal, was launched.
Interest started building in the software, so we started to retool it as a stand-alone
product. The undertaking was a large one, as we had to include features that we
knew people would want, such as a search engine, screened membership, naughty word
censorship, admin-able colors and fonts, etc. The result is was Version 3.0.
Two more versions were developed before POP Forums Version 6.0 was launched. The
new version was a port to the exciting new .NET platform that Microsoft was launching.
POP Forums Version 7.0 took things a step further, with a rich class library
that allowed programmers to build any kind of UI they wanted, without having to
rely on code changes.
Version 8 has been completely rewritten, to take advantage of the ASP.NET AJAX
framework and .NET v3.5 features.
